Qualifications

  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (Major sports).
  • Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continues to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
  • Pupil Activity Permit.
  • CPR (hands on).
  • First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of concussion protocols.
  • Fundamentals of Coaching certification.
  • Sudden cardiac arrest protocol knowledge.

Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervises

High school assistant coaches and middle school coaches, in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal

Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while demonstrating behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, confidence, and pride. Continuously upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultations, etc.

General

  • The success of athletic programs strongly influences the community’s image; public exposure carries responsibility and pressure which must not override objectives of sportsmanship and mental health.
  • The position involves extended time, injury risk, and procedural responsibilities.
  • In cases not specifically covered, the coach is expected to exercise common sense and good judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge of all approved athletic policies and responsible for implementation by the sports staff.
  • Knowledge of state and league regulations; consistently implements and interprets them for staff.
  • Upholds proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels; attends required meetings.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff; design conferences, clinics, and meetings to ensure staff awareness.
  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth via clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistant effectiveness at season’s end.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times; coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
  • Document physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility as required by state and system.
  • Safeguard equipment and protect assigned sites.
  • Advise athletic director and recommend policy or procedural changes.

Student Responsibilities

  • Mentor athletes to develop character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor student athlete grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
  • Distribute sport‑specific training rules and regulations to participants.
  • Initiate injury and medical emergency programs.
  • Complete paperwork for all disabling injuries using proper forms and submit within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, define due‑process procedures, and engage parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes with college or advanced education selection.

Finance and Equipment

  • Participate in budgeting with the athletic director; establish requirements for the next season and recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Account for all equipment and collect costs for lost or unreturned items. Manage issuance, storage, reconditioning, and inventory records.
  • Properly mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; authorize entry, issuance, and requisition.
  • Control athlete access to authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games; maintain cleanliness of sport facilities and equipment.
  • Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks when custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property.

Public Relations

  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promote the sport within the school and externally through media, recruiters, and community programs.
  • Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to media on schedules, tournaments, and results.
