Roles And Responsibilities
The Fitness Director is a unique senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the company-wide fitness business strategy and performance across all club locations while also directly managing club operations within the Manhattan North district. This role serves as the organizational leader for fitness sales performance, personal training strategy, programming standards, fitness team development, and operational excellence company-wide.
In addition, the Fitness Director maintains direct district management responsibilities for the Manhattan North region, overseeing club operations, membership sales, staffing, profitability, customer experience, and operational execution. The ideal candidate is a highly strategic and hands-on leader with strong business acumen, operational discipline, and a proven ability to drive results through both fitness leadership and multi-unit operational management. This position reports directly to senior executive leadership.
Essential Responsibilities
COMPANY-WIDE FITNESS LEADERSHIP
Fitness Strategy & Performance
- Lead the overall fitness business strategy across all club locations company-wide.
- Drive company-wide performance in:
- Personal Training revenue
- Small Group Training revenue
- Active Client Penetration
- PTM Net Gain
- Retention and cancellation targets
- Fitness productivity and profitability
- Analyze fitness business reporting, sales trends, and operational performance to identify opportunities and implement strategic action plans.
- Develop and implement fitness initiatives, programming standards, operational processes, and sales strategies to drive consistency and growth.
- Partner with Regional Leadership, Marketing, Operations, and club leadership teams to execute company-wide fitness initiatives and business objectives.
- Conduct root-cause analysis to identify performance gaps and implement solutions to improve fitness business results.
Fitness Team Development
- Oversee the sourcing, recruiting, onboarding, development, and succession planning of Fitness Managers, Fitness Directors, and Personal Trainers company-wide.
- Develop and maintain onboarding programs, coaching standards, development pathways, and training initiatives for fitness teams.
- Mentor and develop fitness leadership talent to support organizational growth and internal promotion opportunities.
- Provide ongoing coaching, accountability, and performance management to field fitness leadership teams.
- Ensure consistency in fitness standards, sales execution, and member experience across all clubs.
Fitness Operations & Member Experience
- Ensure fitness programs, services, and operational standards are consistently executed throughout all club locations.
- Stay current on fitness industry trends, programming innovations, and competitive positioning to enhance member experience and business performance.
- Partner with club teams to improve member retention, client experience, and fitness product delivery.
- Ensure fitness equipment standards, maintenance expectations, and operational processes are upheld company-wide.
Manhattan North District Management Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Directly oversee all club operations within the Manhattan North district.
- Drive district performance in:
- Membership sales
- Revenue growth
- Net gain
- Retention
- Payroll management
- Operational efficiency
- Customer service
- Ensure clubs consistently execute operational standards, policies, procedures, and brand expectations.
- Conduct regular club visits, operational audits, scorecard reviews, and business performance meetings.
Leadership & Team Accountability
- Lead, coach, and develop General Managers and club leadership teams within the district.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, operational excellence, and member-focused service.
- Conduct performance management, coaching conversations, and development planning with district leadership teams.
- Ensure clubs are appropriately staffed and positioned for operational success.
Financial & Business Management
- Manage district P&L performance with a strong focus on labor, payroll, expense control, and profitability.
- Analyze district KPIs and business trends to create operational and sales strategies that drive results.
- Review and approve staffing schedules to align with business needs and productivity expectations.
- Partner with Human Resources, Facilities, and Corporate Support teams to resolve operational issues and support business objectives.
Customer Experience
- Promote and protect a premium member experience throughout all district clubs.
- Ensure member concerns and escalations are addressed professionally and in a timely manner.
- Conduct member experience assessments and implement action plans for continuous improvement.
- Build strong relationships with members, employees, and community partners.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 5+ years of multi-unit leadership experience in the fitness, hospitality, retail, or service industry.
- Proven success leading both operational and fitness business performance.
- Strong experience driving personal training sales, membership sales, retention, and profitability.
- Demonstrated success developing high-performing leadership teams.
- Strong operational, financial, and business acumen with P&L management experience.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive organizational alignment.
- Experience with CRM, HRIS, ATS, LMS, and business reporting systems preferred.
- Current CPT certification preferred.
- Child & Adult AED/CPR certification required.
- BA or BS degree preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move throughout club locations for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 45 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to demonstrate fitness movements and equipment usage as needed.
- Frequent travel throughout the Manhattan North district and other club locations is required.
Scheduling Requirements
Due to the nature of the business, this position requires schedule flexibility.
- Ability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Required to work during critical business periods, including end-of-month operations.
- Regular travel throughout the district and to company meetings is required.
- Overnight travel may occasionally be necessary.
- Schedule is subject to change based on business needs.
