Position SummaryThe Athletic Coach is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of the assigned athletic program. The coach promotes student-athlete development by fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and personal growth while ensuring compliance with Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC), Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE), and Thompson Public Schools policies and procedures.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganize and supervise all team practices, contests, and related activities. Develop practice plans that promote skill development, teamwork, and physical conditioning. Teach proper techniques, strategies, and rules of the sport.

Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive team culture. Promote good sportsmanship and ethical behavior among student-athletes. Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all participants. Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices, games, and team travel.

Maintain accurate attendance and team records. Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents/guardians, school staff, and the Athletic Director. Ensure equipment is properly maintained, inventoried, and secured. Follow all district, conference, and CIAC regulations.

Encourage academic achievement and monitor student eligibility requirements. Attend required coaches’ meetings, professional development, and rules interpretation meetings. Report injuries, accidents, and disciplinary concerns in accordance with district procedures. Assist in promoting the athletic program and encouraging student participation.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal. QualificationsCandidates must: Hold or be eligible to obtain a Connecticut Coaching Permit issued by the Connecticut State Department of Education. Possess current certification in: oFirst Aid oCPR/AED oConcussion Training (as required) Demonstrate knowledge of the assigned sport. Exhibit strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Successfully complete all required background checks and district hiring requirements. Preferred QualificationsPrevious coaching and/or playing experience in the assigned sport. Experience working with middle or high school students. Knowledge of CIAC rules and regulations.

Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and the community. Physical RequirementsThe coach must be able to: Stand, walk, run, and demonstrate athletic skills for extended periods. Lift and move athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Work indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions.

Travel with teams to practices and competitions as required. Terms of EmploymentSeasonal position. Compensation in accordance with the Thompson Public Schools Coaches’ Salary Schedule and applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employment is contingent upon maintaining all required coaching certifications and meeting district employment requirements.
