Philly Archery is Philadelphia’s premier archery range, dedicated to introducing athletes of all skill levels to the sport of archery in a safe, inclusive, and professional environment. We offer recreational introductory sessions, structured coaching programs, competitive league play, youth development, and small group instruction. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced and passionate Archery Operations Manager to lead our team and operations.
Role Overview
The Archery Operations Manager is the operational and instructional heart of Philly Archery. This role prioritizes team leadership and facility operations over coaching/teaching. You will be responsible for maintaining the standards of the business, elevating customer service efforts, managing shifts, and ensuring that every archer has a safe, high-quality experience. You will set the customer care standard for the site and cultivate a culture of excellence both on and off the range.
Archery Technical Skills & Expertise
These requirements are non-negotiable and form the foundation of this role:
Certifications & Credentials
- Required: Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification; must maintain throughout employment
- Preferred: USA Archery Level 2 Instructor certification (Level 3 or NTS Coach strongly preferred)
Technical Proficiency
- Expert-level command of recurve and compound bow mechanics, including Olympic recurve setup and tuning
- Deep knowledge of arrow flight dynamics, spine selection, point weight, and fletching configurations
- Ability to diagnose and correct form deficiencies across beginner, intermediate, and competitive archers using established frameworks (e.g., USA Archery National Training System)
- Proficiency in bow press operation, limb alignment, draw weight adjustment, and equipment repair
- Familiarity with traditional archery (longbow, barebow) to guide and support members pursuing these disciplines
- Current knowledge of tournament rules, FITA/World Archery regulations, and indoor/outdoor competition formats
- Ability to design and implement structured training programs and progressive curricula for youth and adult learners
Leadership Experience & Management Skills
The ideal candidate brings 3+ years of leadership experience in an archery, sports, or recreation setting:
Team Leadership
- Demonstrated experience hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating coaches and range staff
- Ability to mentor junior instructors in both technical archery skills and coaching pedagogy
- Strong track record of building inclusive, motivated, and high-performing teams
- Conflict resolution skills to handle staff performance issues and member concerns professionally
Operations Management
- Experience overseeing daily operations of a range, gym, studio, or similar recreational facility
- Ability to manage inventory of equipment (bows, arrows, protective gear) and coordinate with vendors for maintenance and purchasing
- Competence with scheduling software, point-of-sale systems, and basic reporting tools
- Experience developing and enforcing safety protocols and range rules in compliance with local regulations
Program & Community Development
- Proven ability to develop archery programs that grow membership and increase retention
- Experience organizing and running in-house competitions, leagues, clinics, or events
- Comfortable engaging the local community through outreach, social media, school partnerships, or similar initiatives
- Skill in building relationships with competitive archers, youth programs, and beginner populations simultaneously
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and mentor a team of part-time and full-time range staff and assistant coaches
- Oversee daily range operations, open shoots, private lessons, group classes, and events
- Maintain all equipment in safe, functional condition; coordinate repairs and procure new inventory as needed
- Develop, deliver, and continuously improve structured curriculum for youth, adult, recreational, and competitive archers
- Enforce and update range safety policies; investigate and document any incidents
- Collaborate with ownership on budgeting, marketing, and strategic growth initiatives
- Track and report on key metrics including class attendance, membership, and revenue
- Represent Philly Archery at community events, competitions, and industry gatherings
- Serve as the an additional instructor and technical authority for all Philly Archery coaching programs
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 3 years of coaching or instructing sports at any level
- Minimum 2 years of management or supervisory experience
- Strong communication skills with the ability to adapt instruction style to diverse audiences
- Demonstrated commitment to participant safety and sport integrity
Preferred
- 5+ years of active archery experience across multiple disciplines (recurve, compound, traditional)
- USA Archery Level 2/3 Coach or National Training System (NTS) certification
- Competitive archery background at collegiate, national, or Olympic Trial level
- Experience managing a pro shop, retail inventory, or equipment fitting service
- Background in youth development, adaptive archery, or para-archery programming
- Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Kinesiology, Education, or a related field
Work Environment & Schedule
This is a primarily on-site role at our Philadelphia facility. The Archery Center Manager must be present on the range regularly and is expected to lead by example. The schedule will include evenings and weekends to accommodate peak member hours, league nights, and weekend events. Some travel may be required for competitions, clinics, or industry conferences.
Standard Business Hours: Wednesday to Friday 1-9pm; Saturday 10am-9pm; Sunday 11am-9pm
