Position: Water Safety Instructor (Rec Asst)

Job Summary

The primary function of this position is to instruct swimming and water safety classes at the Aquatics facility for patrons of all ages.

Duties

  • Instruct swimming at various levels and strokes (front crawl, backcrawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, etc.) for students ranging from infant to adult.
  • Provide basic diving, safety, and survival skills instruction.
  • Work with lifeguards to ensure all lessons are safe at all times.
  • Enforce pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all patrons.
  • Plan and organize instruction methods and goals aligned with the Aquatics Program Manager and certifying organization.
  • Organize and direct activities of students to deliver high‑quality instruction.
  • Develop swim programs based on student abilities and promote advancement to higher levels.
  • Provide individual feedback to parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Provide introductory equipment orientations when needed.
  • Inspect equipment used for instruction and report deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Administer aquatic assessment testing and certification per DoD, DON, and CNIC policy.
  • Document and submit completed lesson records to the Aquatics Program Manager and the American Red Cross office.
  • Continuously improve teaching skills with guidance from the Aquatics Program Manager.
  • Prepare and complete accident/incident reports during emergencies and promptly notify management.
  • Handle hazardous materials such as cleaning agents and pool chemicals.
  • Verify patron identification cards for proper usage.
  • Assist in the development of special programs, activities, or instruction.
  • Maintain a clean environment by tidying equipment used for lessons.
  • Answer telephone calls providing information about facility hours, events, and programs.
  • Complete daily activity reports, handle cash where applicable, verify amounts, and deposit cashier bag into drop safe.

Requirements

  • All active certifications required: Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard, CPR for Professional Rescuer, First Aid including AED, Blood‑borne Pathogens.
  • Must have direct deposit or electronic funds transfer set up through a financial institution of choice.
  • Must pass an E‑Verify employment verification check; any discrepancies must be resolved before employment.

Qualifications

  • Failure to provide all five certifications will result in disqualification from consideration.
  • Knowledge of organization instructional methods and goals.
  • Knowledge of DoD, DON, and CNIC aquatic assessment and testing policy.
  • Knowledge of basic water safety equipment for various age groups.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid procedures, including AED and blood‑borne pathogens.
  • Basic arithmetic to compute charges, handle change, and prepare reports.
  • Cash handling procedures knowledge.
  • Ability to complete a 300‑yard swim in less than 10 minutes.
  • Ability to assess and instruct swimming skills, basic diving, and water safety for all age groups.
  • Ability to plan and organize skill‑ and age‑based instruction.
  • Ability to rescue individuals in the water, including panicked or unconscious persons.
  • Ability to enforce strict safety regulations to protect swimmers.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work varied schedules, including holidays, weekends, and evenings.
  • Ability to work with hazardous materials (cleaning agents, pool chemicals, etc.).

Compensation & Schedule

  • Salary: $19.25 – $20.50 per hour.
  • Pay Scale: NF 2.
  • Work Schedule:

    Intermittent—flexible (0‑40 hours per week, schedule not guaranteed).

  • Travel Required:

    No.

  • Appointment Type:
    Intermittent (June – September 2026).
