Position Summary
Detroit Country Day School seeks an experienced, dynamic, and highly motivated Head Football Coach to lead its MHSAA varsity football program beginning July 1, 2027. This is a seasonal stipend position within DCDS’ Athletic Program and may be combined with a full-time teaching or administrative role, depending on school needs. The Head Coach will report to the Athletic Leadership Team and will be responsible for all aspects of the varsity football program, including the development of a cohesive, multi-level program from the Middle School through Varsity levels. The successful candidate will carry forward a proud tradition while bringing a clear vision for the program’s future.
Primary Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Culture
  • Establish and sustain a program culture centered on academic achievement, character, discipline, and competitive excellence.
  • Build meaningful relationships with student-athletes, their families, faculty, alumni, and the broader DCDS community.
  • Serve as an ambassador for DCDS athletics — modeling professionalism, sportsmanship, and integrity at all times.
  • Collaborate with school leadership to ensure alignment between athletic participation and the school’s educational mission.
Coaching & Player Development
  • Design and implement a comprehensive football program at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School levels with coordinated systems and consistent player development pathways.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct all practices, film sessions, strength & conditioning coordination, pre- and off-season player development, and game-day preparation.
  • Develop individual players through expert instruction, individualized feedback, and high expectations for effort and accountability.
  • Implement an offensive and defensive system appropriate to the talent and academic calendar of a high-achieving independent school.
  • Monitor and support the academic progress of all student-athletes, partnering with the academic support team when necessary.
Staff & Operations Management
  • Recruit (with AD approval) and lead a high-quality coaching staff; provide ongoing mentorship and professional development for assistant coaches.
  • Oversee all program logistics including scheduling, equipment, facilities use, travel, and budget management.
  • Ensure full compliance with MHSAA regulations, school policies, and all relevant safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with the strength and conditioning staff to develop year-round fitness programming for the football program.
Recruiting & Community Engagement
  • Actively engage in youth program development opportunities to draw DCDS students toward consideration of participation in the football program.
  • Cultivate relationships with feeder programs, youth leagues, and middle school coaches to build a sustainable pipeline.
  • Maintain a visible, positive presence in the school community and support broader athletic department initiatives.
  • Engage alumni, parents, and boosters to strengthen community support for the program.
  • Actively maintain a social media presence that highlights the program and promotes the values of the school.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years of coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or equivalent competitive level, with demonstrated success.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and retain a coaching staff.
  • Strong knowledge of football strategy, player development, and contemporary coaching methodologies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills — with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-athlete welfare, academic achievement, and ethical conduct.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certified (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, school breaks, and attend team-related events
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Sports Management, Exercise Science, or related field.
  • Experience coaching in an independent school or similar educational environment.
  • Familiarity with the MHSAA competitive landscape in southeastern Michigan.
  • Experience coordinating a multi-level (varsity/JV/MS) program.
  • Prior collegiate athletic or coaching experience; Division I experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency with film review software (e.g., Hudl) and modern recruiting tools.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during practices, games, meetings, and events.
  • Ability to demonstrate athletic techniques and safely supervise student-athletes.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Ability to lift, carry, move and set up athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, as needed.
  • Ability to see and hear sufficiently to supervise student-athletes and respond to emergencies.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a seasonal position, compensated on a stipend basis. Specific stipend details will be discussed during the interview process.
