Position Overview
The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) is a public liberal arts and sciences university on the Island of Hawaii, recognized for its integration of cultural immersion and place-based research that leverages the island’s extraordinary geological, biological, and cultural diversity. The UH Hilo Vulcans represent the University of Hawai’i at Hilo in NCAA Division II competition as a member of the Pacific West Conference. The athletic program supports 12 varsity teams, including women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis. UH Hilo Athletics fosters a competitive environment for student-athletes in the heart of the Big Island.

Known for its vibrant community support and “Vulcan Pride,” the teams compete against both regional rivals and national opponents while maintaining a strong focus on academic achievement and local engagement.
UH Hilo baseball is a NCAA D2 program that offers competitive play, strong academics, and a close-knit team environment-balanced with heavy travel for competition. The baseball head coach is responsible to lead a program that balances academics, competition and practices, community service activities despite unique geographic challenges. Time management is key to achieving this balance.

Duties and Responsibilities (

  • ** Lead the Baseball program with a commitment to excellence, integrity, and the mission of UH Hilo Athletics.
  • ** Responsible for assisting and supporting the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics in administration and operations.
  • ** Direct and organize coaching staff to achieve program goals and objectives.
  • ** Manage the allocated budget to ensure fiscal balance; recommend personnel, financial, and facility needs to the Director of Athletics.
  • ** Assist with departmental operations and participate in camps or clinics as required.
  • ** Organize daily practices, game-day strategies, and off-season training programs.
  • ** Implement risk management strategies and collaborate with athletic trainer and sports medicine staff to ensure player safety and wellness.
  • Provide general advising and support, acting as a role model for ethical decision-making and sportsmanship.
  • ** Identify and recruit NCAA-eligible student-athletes capable of competing at the Division II level (Pacific West Conference).
  • ** Collaborate with the Compliance Officer to track admissions and eligibility; recommend scholarship awards to the Director of Athletics.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress in coordination with the Athletics Academic Advisor.
  • ** Responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of the NCAA as it relates to the Baseball program.
  • ** Coordinate and recommend schedules for home tournaments and non-conference games.
  • ** Actively engage in marketing, public relations, and fundraising to support the program.
  • ** Participate in community service, service learning, and activities that promote respect for diversity and cross-cultural differences.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in any field and three (3) seasons of experience in coaching university of college Baseball; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of coaching and recruitment as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with NCAA policies, rules and regulations.
