Do you live for Friday night lights, packed gyms in February, state tournament runs, and telling the stories behind the athletes?
The Grundy Register and Butler County Eclipse are seeking a full-time Sports Editor to lead sports coverage for two of Iowa’s premier community newspapers. This is an opportunity to become the trusted voice of high school athletics across some of the most successful and tradition-rich athletic programs in the state.
From football powerhouses and championship wrestling programs to elite volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, and more, you’ll cover outstanding athletes, dedicated coaches, and communities that genuinely care about local sports.

About the Position
As Sports Editor, you will oversee sports coverage for The Grundy Register and Butler County Eclipse, covering seven outstanding school districts throughout Butler and Grundy counties.
Your work will appear in print, online, on social media, and in special publications, reaching thousands of loyal readers each week.
You’ll be responsible for much more than writing game recaps. We’re looking for someone who enjoys telling the stories behind the score—highlighting athletes, coaches, teams, rivalries, traditions, and the moments that define local communities.
Responsibilities
- Cover high school sporting events throughout the school year across seven school districts.
- Write engaging game stories, feature articles, previews, season recaps, and athlete profiles.
- Photograph sporting events and community activities.
- Interview coaches, athletes, administrators, and community members.
- Maintain statistics, standings, records, and postseason coverage.
- Produce content for our websites and social media platforms.
- Coordinate and produce special sports sections, previews, postseason coverage, and championship editions.
- Generate original story ideas that celebrate the people and traditions behind local athletics.
- Ensure all coverage meets AP Style and the high editorial standards of Nelson Media Company.
- Work closely with editors, writers, photographers, and community contributors.
Qualifications
- Strong writing, interviewing, and communication skills.
- Passion for high school sports and community journalism.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines.
- Knowledge of Iowa high school athletics preferred.
- Photography experience is highly desirable.
- Experience with social media and digital publishing.
- Familiarity with AP Style is preferred.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to work evenings and weekends during athletic seasons.
- Journalism, communications, sports media, or related experience is preferred but not required.
