We are seeking a hands-on Embedded Software Engineer to develop firmware and low-level software for electro-mechanical medical devices. This role focuses on real-time control systems, hardware/software integration, and bringing embedded systems from early prototypes through verification, validation, and manufacturing transfer.
The ideal candidate is technically strong, detail-oriented, and eager to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, bringing innovative healthcare technologies to market. Must be comfortable working close to hardware, enjoys debugging at the signal level, and thrives in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary product development environment. Candidate must have the ability to read schematics and plans, detect and solve problems, and provide design input.
Key Responsibilities
- Support product design and development of Class I–III medical devices in accordance with FDA and international regulatory standards
- Generate and execute engineering test protocols
- Participate in concept development, feasibility studies, and prototype fabrication
- Design, develop, and test embedded firmware (microcontroller-based systems)
- Implement real-time control logic for sensors, actuators, and electromechanical subsystems (e.g., motors, pumps, valves)
- Interface directly with hardware during board bring-up, debugging, and system integration
- Develop drivers and communication interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, ADC/DAC, USB, BLE as applicable)
- Write efficient, reliable, and maintainable code in C/C++
- Support system architecture definition, including task scheduling, memory management, and fault handling
- Develop and execute unit, integration, and system-level tests (including hardware-in-the-loop where applicable)
- Debug issues using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers)
- Contribute to risk management and hazard mitigation strategies (e.g., fault detection, watchdogs, safe states)
- Support software verification and validation (V&V) activities in alignment with regulatory standards
- Generate and maintain documentation for Design History File (DHF), including requirements, architecture, and traceability
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers to ensure robust system performance
- Participate in technical reviews with cross-functional teams (engineering, quality, regulatory)
- Assist with root cause investigations and engineering change orders (ECOs)
- Read and understand technical datasheets and IEC requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 0–10 years of experience (internships/co-ops in medical device, biotech, or regulated industry preferred)
- Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems
- Familiarity with microcontrollers and low-level hardware interaction
- Understanding of real-time systems fundamentals (interrupts, timers, concurrency)
- Basic knowledge of digital and analog electronics
- Experience with debugging tools (JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers)
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS or similar)
- Experience with test method development and validation
- Familiarity with medical device software standard IEC 62304
- Exposure to ISO 14971 and design controls under 21 CFR Part 820
- Experience with motor control, closed-loop systems, or sensor integration
- Familiarity with power management and battery-operated systems
- Experience with bootloaders, firmware updates, or device configuration tools
- Exposure to cybersecurity fundamentals for embedded systems
- Experience with Git and structured development workflows
