6U & 8U Youth Development — Learn to Play & Beginner Levels

PAY RATE $70.00 / hour HOURS 10–15 hrs / week

SEASON September – April

SCHEDULE 2 weekday evenings + every Saturday morning

The Opportunity

Step onto the ice with the next generation of Rochester Jr. Americans. As a Mite Hockey Clinician, you’ll create a fun, safe, and high-energy environment where kids ages 4–8 fall in love with the game. This is where hockey careers begin — and you’ll be the coach who makes those first strides, first passes, and first goals unforgettable.

In this role, you’ll lead across three of our foundational youth programs — the Mite Skills program, the Recreation Program, and Intro to Hockey — helping brand-new and developing players build fundamentals, confidence, and a lasting love for the game. If you love the game and love working with young athletes, this is your rink.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and assist with on-ice clinics for 6U and 8U players.
  • Teach the fundamentals — skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, and early game concepts.
  • Bring the energy: demonstrate drills with proper technique and genuine enthusiasm.
  • Create a positive, inclusive environment where every player feels valued.
  • Work with the Jr. Americans Youth Organization coaching staff on-ice station development.
  • Follow the program curriculum provided by The Academy.
  • Partner with Academy senior staff on weekly planning for on-ice teaching.
  • Run cross-ice games, small-area games, and skill stations that keep kids moving.
  • Champion effort, teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect.
  • Deliver constructive, encouraging feedback that builds confidence.
  • Keep players safe by enforcing USA Hockey and RIC facility guidelines.
  • Assist with station setup and cleanup before and after each session.
  • Communicate clearly with fellow coaches and program directors.
  • Be a role model on and off the ice.

Schedule & Commitment

  • Pay: $70.00 per hour.
  • Hours: 10–15 hours per week.
  • When: Two weekday evenings and every Saturday morning.
  • Season: September through April.
  • On-ice ready: Arrive 30 minutes before each session, prepared with a clinic plan, energy, and a teaching mindset.

What You Bring

  • Playing or coaching experience in hockey.
  • Strong skating ability.
  • A real passion for working with young athletes.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • A positive attitude and team-first mentality.
  • The ability to adapt instruction to varying skill levels.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current USA Hockey Coaching Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • SafeSport Certification.
  • USA Hockey Background Screening (as required).

What Makes a Great Mite Clinician

The best clinicians make every player feel like they belong. Above all, you are a teacher. They:

  • Keep players active with minimal standing around.
  • Lead with positive reinforcement.
  • Make practice fun while teaching real fundamentals.
  • Show patience with young athletes.
  • Build confidence in every child.
  • Celebrate effort as much as achievement.

Our Program Philosophy

Our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of hockey by developing confident skaters, good teammates, and respectful young athletes. We believe learning happens best when players are having fun, staying engaged, and feeling supported. Every practice should leave players excited to come back to the rink.
