The Rehabilitation Physiotherapist 1st Team is responsible for the delivery, coordination, and continuous development of rehabilitation and injury-prevention processes for assigned first-team players of RB Leipzig. The role provides expert sports physiotherapy and sports therapy support throughout the entire injury management pathway, from initial injury through rehabilitation and return to training and competition. Working closely with Sports Medicine, Performance, and Sport Science staff, the post holder ensures that players receive world-class care, evidence-based rehabilitation, and individual performance support.
The role also includes daily involvement in training and match operations, player preparation, injury management, and the continuous development of medical performance systems.
Job Description
Rehabilitation Management
- Assess and communicate individual rehabilitation requirements following short- and long-term injuries.
- Design, implement, and progress individual rehabilitation programmes from injury onset through return to training and competition.
- Deliver and supervise gym-based and pitch-based rehabilitation sessions.
- Guide, monitor, and evaluate rehabilitation interventions to ensure safe and effective progression.
- Measure, analyse, and communicate individual player development throughout the rehabilitation process.
- Implement progressive load-management and reconditioning strategies to support return-to-performance outcomes.
Physiotherapy Support in Training and Competition
- Deliver physiotherapy treatments, including manual therapy and soft tissue techniques, for both injured and available players.
- Prepare and activate players individually prior to training sessions and matches.
- Support daily training operations and matchday activities, including pitch-side physiotherapy provision and emergency injury care.
- Provide sports physiotherapy support both within the medical department and on-pitch environments.
Injury Prevention
- Identify and communicate individual and squad injury-prevention requirements.
- Collect, analyse, and interpret relevant performance and injury data to identify injury risk factors.
- Design, implement, and monitor individualised injury-prevention programmes.
- Educate, support, and supervise players throughout prevention interventions.
- Measure and report individual player development and prevention outcomes.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Athletic Performance staff to integrate rehabilitation principles within physical development programmes.
- Contribute to performance recommendations that support individual athletic development.
- Develop and implement strategies to address physical deficits during injury-related or non-injury-related training interruptions.
- Work collaboratively with Sport Science staff to analyse rehabilitation and injury-prevention requirements.
- Contribute to the design of individual player development programmes incorporating primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention principles.
- Maintain close collaboration with the Coordinator of Athletic Performance and Physical Development to ensure alignment of rehabilitation standards throughout the club.
- Provide clear and timely reporting to the Lead Physiotherapist and Head of Sports Medicine.
Documentation and System Development
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation across all designated medical and performance platforms.
- Record rehabilitation content, treatment interventions, testing outcomes, player responses, and return-to-play milestones.
- Support the ongoing development and utilisation of AP Hub within the Sports Medicine department.
Qualifications
- Qualified Physiotherapist (State Registered Physiotherapist or Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy) with relevant professional registration.
- Extensive experience delivering rehabilitation and return-to-performance programmes within professional football or elite sport, including both gym-based and on-pitch rehabilitation.
- Strong expertise in load management, reconditioning, and performance restoration following injury.
- Extensive practical experience in manual therapy and soft tissue treatment techniques.
- Strong football-specific understanding with the ability to translate rehabilitation objectives into football-related activities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience educating players and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Highly organised and self-motivated, demonstrating strong planning, decision-making, documentation, and reporting capabilities.
- Flexible, resilient, and trustworthy team player with fluent German and English (written and spoken) or a strong commitment to developing professional proficiency in both languages.
- Degree in Physiotherapy or qualification as a State Registered Physiotherapist
- Fluent German and English, both written and spoken, or a strong commitment to attaining professional proficiency.
