Job Description
Parks, Recreation and Tourism is seeking a dynamic, community-focused professional to oversee athletic programming and facility rental operations for youth and adult sports leagues, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, football, softball, field hockey, and cheerleading. Programs, events, and rentals are held at recreation centers, athletic fields, schools, and other City facilities throughout Chesapeake.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee athletic leagues, tournaments, practices, facility rentals, and special events.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by responding to participant, coach, volunteer, and public inquiries and communicating program information.
  • Supervise part-time staff, volunteers, officials, and contractors, including recruiting, training, scheduling, and evaluating performance.
  • Ensure programs and facilities operate safely and efficiently by enforcing policies, monitoring participant conduct, resolving conflicts, and responding to accidents or incidents.
  • Assist with program registration, team formation, scheduling, facility reservations, and revenue collection using ActiveNet Recreation Software and Microsoft Office.
  • Develop marketing materials and community partnerships to promote athletic programs and increase participation.
  • Maintain athletic equipment, uniforms, and inventory; assist with budgeting, purchasing, and coordinating equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare athletic fields and facilities for practices, games, tournaments, rentals, and special events by setting up and breaking down goals, nets, field equipment, tables, chairs, tents, bleachers, and other recreational equipment.
  • Make presentations to community groups, support volunteer and coach development, and assist with Citywide events and recreational programs as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, business administration, recreation/sports management, physical education, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one year of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. Depending on position, specific certifications/designations may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment; effectively communicate with the public.

Experience using POS systems, and ActiveNet software.

Some experience in developing polices & procedures and training staff.

Previous cash handling and transaction processing experience.

Advance skill level in customer service.

Knowledge of certification, licensing, permit and compliance requirements, and policies related to recreational activities.

Educational requirements can include a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Sports Management, or Public Administration or related fields.

Must possess knowledge of recreational games, sports, arts and crafts, fitness programs, cultural awareness programs and special events.
