Summary:

The Recreation Coordinator is an essential part of Recreation with the Town of Berthoud. This position is responsible for overseeing recreational sports and other programs, and for direct oversight of hourly and seasonal employees and volunteers. In addition, this includes program implementation, recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating staff. The Recreation Coordinator position is instrumental in creating and fostering relationships throughout the community. This position directly reports to the Sports/Program Supervisor. The schedule of this position is full-time, with five eight-hour shifts Monday – Friday, along with occasional weekend and holiday work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Responsible for planning, organizing, developing, scheduling, and evaluating recreation and athletic programs.
  • Ensure facilities are available, reserved, and are in safe and presentable conditions for all programs and activities.
  • Assists with hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating recreation staff.
  • Coordinate volunteer requests from the community; recruit, train, and supervise volunteer coaches and staff.
  • Conduct and attend a variety of training seminars, staff meetings, coaching clinics, and community meetings.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; distribute supplies and equipment; assist with ordering supplies and equipment for recreation and athletic programs.
  • Assist the Recreation Supervisor and Marketing with preparing and distributing flyers, newsletters, press releases, social media posts, and brochures.
  • Establish team rosters, schedule leagues and tournaments, and enforce rules and regulations of recreation and athletic programs.
  • Assist with preparing and administering individual program or facility budgets as appropriate; monitor expenditures and payroll in accordance with established procedures. Provide clerical support, program registration, answer telephones and maintain correspondence with other divisions or agencies; .
  • Ability to officiate youth and/or adult sports as needed.
  • May perform emergency custodial maintenance work. Set up tables, sports equipment, chairs and bleachers for classes and programs.
  • May provide security for the building and grounds. In addition, makes safety checks on the facility and eliminate hazards to ensure complete safety of the patrons.
  • Responsible for the opening and closing of recreation used facilities as required.
  • Must attend weekend league games as requested by the recreation supervisor.
  • Coordinates adult and youth leagues. Must attend the first and last game of each season
  • Assist with the Town of Berthoud’s special events and be available to work on holidays.

  • Oversee regularly scheduled staff meetings and provide professional development and training for staff.
  • Administer surveys to gauge participant satisfaction levels, constructive feedback, and gain ideas for new programs and special events
  • Work directly with Marketing staff to ensure marketing materials, website, and social media sites are updated with accurate information
  • Perform related duties as required

  • Considerable knowledge of developing and administering recreation and youth city government programs; working knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports; ability to run recreation department in supervisor’s absence;

  • Ability to work evenings, night shifts, split shifts, weekends and some holidays. This position will work four (4) ten hour shifts, though the schedule varies based on program need.
  • Ability to participate in active sports and recreation activities; ability to organize and direct recreation programs;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, public, news media, and other departments and agencies; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to direct the work of others
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with participants and create a welcoming and inclusive environment

  • Ability to work with facilities and parks staff to ensure building and field setups are completed in a timely manner
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should understand general office software, including word processing and spreadsheets. Also, a basic understanding of internet research tools is required

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, physical education, social work, psychology or a closely related field is accepted and 1-3 years of experience in public recreation or any equivalent combination of above education or experience required.

Work Experience:

  • Experience with recreation software is preferred
  • Experience in working with children ages 3-6 years of age in a sports setting preferred.
  • Head coaching experience for ages 8-14 years of age preferred.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid and AED or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • A valid Colorado Drivers License (Class C) is required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment

The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, both high and low temperatures. The employee may regularly travel to and from buildings to complete job responsibilities and tasks assigned.

  • Manual dexterity enough to complete daily work such as room setups/breakdowns, cleaning, drive and operate motor vehicles and lifts, and operate other office equipment and complete paperwork.
