Position: Recreation Assistant (Sports Official) NF-02.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties under the general direction of the CYS Services Sports and Fitness Director or Assistant Sports and Fitness Director.
  • Serves as Army CYS Services sports official, officiating basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, or other organized sports within the Youth Sports and Fitness Program.
  • Displays a professional demeanor at all times and manages participant and spectator behavior to ensure sportsmanship. Handles on‑site disputes involving participants or spectators.
  • Inspects sporting equipment, playing area, and examines participants for correct attire to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations. Directs participants to assigned areas such as starting blocks or sides of the field/court.
  • Confers with other sports officials, coaches, participants, and facility managers to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems. Compiles scores and other athletic records.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
  • A one‑year probationary period may be required.
  • Must satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E‑Verify) check.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre‑employment checks in accordance with AR 215‑3, including the Crime Control Act and a Child Care Tier 1 background investigation.
  • A current health assessment is required; immunizations including annual flu vaccination are required.
  • Physical demands: stamina sufficient to stand, walk, run, or squat for long periods of time appropriate to the sport to be officiated.
  • Must occasionally be able to lift or move up to 40 lbs (heavier items with assistance). Vision sufficient to execute job requirements.

Qualifications

  • Substantial knowledge of the rules of the sport to be officiated, evidenced by documented training sessions or seminars, extensive playing or coaching experience that provides equivalent knowledge.
  • Possession of a valid license, recognized national association credential, or certificate for sports officials.
  • The ability to communicate in English, both written and verbal.
  • Specific certifications, licenses, or credentials may be required by individual states, municipalities, or installations.

This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

  • Pay is part of a pay‑banded system. Sunday premium pay for regularly scheduled employees and night differential pay may be authorized.
  • Non‑foreign overseas allowances, cost‑of‑living allowance (COLA), and differentials will not be paid.
  • Temporary limited commissary privileges are granted to CYS employees, excluding tobacco or alcohol products, valid until 31 December 2026.
  • Flex positions are not eligible for leave or benefits.
  • Access to certain federal facilities may require a REAL ‑compliant driver’s license or an Enhanced Driver’s License from specified states.
