About the Role
We are looking for enthusiastic, passionate people who love everything about health and fitness and are ready to provide a high‑level lifeguard and customer service experience in line with professional codes of conduct, corporate policies and procedures. The role involves supporting a wide range of sporting and leisure activities while ensuring customer satisfaction, health and safety and quality service delivery.
Job Purpose
- To provide an effective and efficient lifeguard service in accordance with professional codes of conduct, corporate policies and procedures.
- To carry out a range of duties to assist in the provision of sport and leisure activities, whilst ensuring customer satisfaction, health and safety and delivering a quality service.
Responsibilities
- Administer First Aid as necessary and report accidents, injuries and incidents as per procedures.
- Carry out duties in accordance with current codes of practice, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, COSHH, SOPs and Emergency Action Plans.
- Perform general cleaning duties as per the centre’s cleaning schedules, meeting agreed quality standards and using manual and mechanical equipment safely.
- Erect, dismantle and store equipment safely and methodically.
- Contribute to the performance of the facility, ensuring a customer‑focused service.
- Supervise children’s activities and parties, ensuring compliance with child protection policies.
- Promote and support equal opportunities and health & safety.
- Undertake any other duties directed by the supervisor that may be reasonably required, commensurate with grade and responsibility.
Progression Criteria to A2
- Supervise swimming pool activities, identifying potential hazards and taking appropriate action per SOPs, Emergency Action Plans and National Pool Lifeguard guidelines.
- Maintain National Pool Lifeguard qualification by attending required training sessions as per national guidelines and council corporate guidelines.
Essential Qualifications
- Hold and maintain the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification as a condition of employment.
- Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
- Able to work on own initiative or as part of a team with minimum supervision.
- Organise and prioritise key duties.
- Understand and interpret instructions.
- Demonstrate a good level of general fitness.
- Motivate self and others.
- Adapt to different work situations.
- Knowledge of child protection and welfare issues.
- Experience working with customers.
- Experience of lifeguarding duties/tasks.

Desirable Requirements
- Awareness of health and safety requirements.
- First Aid qualification.
- ASA/UKCC Level 2 or Level 1 Aquatics qualification.
- Gym Instructor NVQ Level 2 or equivalent.
- Experience in a public leisure centre or private sector industry.
- Experience with specialist lifeguard equipment.
