Position Summary
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is excited to add an innovative and passionate Part Time Recreation Specialist to the team at Ivory Baker Recreation Center. This position will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing specific area programs and offering services to diverse communities, such as youth and teens, adults, and seniors. Specific program areas could include arts and crafts, 4H/Cooperative extensions, social events, fitness, summer/day camps, health and wellness, and after‑school programs.
In addition to providing recreation programming, the incumbent will participate in marketing, resource/budget planning, and monitoring their programs for quality assurance. They will also be a key member of staff in developing and maintaining strong relationships with the community. The successful candidate will have experience working with diverse populations and develop creative programs to meet community interests and needs. This position requires approximately 29 hours per week, which may include evenings and rotating weekends based on business/facility needs.

Essential Functions
- Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
- Supervise children involved in after‑school, summer camp, child watch or other recreational programs.
- Provide customer service and handle funds in a recreation center or park facility through telephone, emails, web site, social media, and walk‑in patrons and customers for information, program registration, center daily use and rentals.
- Ensure safety of participants and spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
- Enforce rules and regulations.
- Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
- Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
- Referee at various sports activities.
- Provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper or linesperson at games.
- Handle inquiries and complaints from the public.
- Some programs may require driving a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location.
- Assist with department events and field trips.
- May serve as manager on duty if the Senior Recreation Specialist is not available.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
No experience required.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including one of the following:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree with two (2) years of related experience.
- Four (4) years of similar related experience.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree with 6 months of prior work experience as a temporary or part‑time employee with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
Computer Skills
Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
Licenses and Certifications
Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges; CPR/First Aid.
