Nurse Practitioner – Orthopedic & Musculoskeletal Medicine
Position Overview
Performance Health Institute is seeking an experienced, highly autonomous Nurse Practitioner with advanced training and expertise in Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Medicine to join our growing New York City team. This provider will function independently while collaborating with orthopedic surgeons, pain management specialists, physiatrists, and rehabilitation professionals to deliver comprehensive musculoskeletal care. **Minimum of 3,600 hours of qualifying clinical experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner, meeting New York State requirements for independent practice without a written practice agreement.
The ideal candidate possesses exceptional diagnostic acumen, procedural proficiency, and a strong understanding of orthopedic pathology, sports medicine, regenerative medicine, and non-operative musculoskeletal management. This role requires the ability to independently evaluate, diagnose, formulate treatment plans, perform office-based procedures, and manage patients throughout the continuum of care.

Essential ResponsibilitiesClinical Evaluation & Diagnosis
- Independently perform comprehensive orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluations.
- Obtain detailed patient histories and conduct focused physical examinations.
- Diagnose acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions involving the spine, upper extremities, lower extremities, and peripheral joints.
- Evaluate sports-related injuries, occupational injuries, degenerative conditions, and post-surgical orthopedic patients.
- Assess and manage conditions including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Tendinopathies
- Ligament injuries
- Rotator cuff pathology
- Meniscal injuries
- Spine disorders
- Radiculopathy
- Neuropathies
- Joint instability
- Fracture follow-up care
Treatment Planning & Patient Management
- Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans independently.
- Coordinate conservative and interventional treatment pathways.
- Order and interpret diagnostic studies including:
- X-rays
- MRI
- CT imaging
- Diagnostic ultrasound
- EMG/NCS reports
- Laboratory testing
- Manage patient care from initial consultation through recovery and follow-up.
- Identify appropriate candidates for surgical consultation and coordinate transitions of care.
- Collaborate closely with physical therapy, chiropractic, pain management, orthopedic surgery, and rehabilitation teams.
Procedural Responsibilities
- Perform ultrasound-guided and landmark-guided joint injections.
- Administer corticosteroid, viscosupplementation, and biologic/regenerative medicine injections.
- Perform trigger point injections and soft tissue procedures.
- Assist with or independently perform office-based orthopedic procedures within scope of practice.
- Apply and manage splints, braces, immobilization devices, and orthopedic supports.
- Perform aspiration and injection of peripheral joints and bursae.
Regenerative Medicine & Sports Medicine
- Evaluate and manage patients seeking non-surgical treatment alternatives.
- Participate in regenerative medicine programs including PRP and orthobiologic therapies.
- Develop treatment plans focused on restoring function and improving quality of life.
- Manage athletes and active individuals with sports-related injuries and performance-limiting conditions.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within electronic medical record systems.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, state regulations, payer requirements, and organizational policies.
- Complete appropriate coding and documentation to support medical necessity and reimbursement.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical outcome tracking.
Patient Education
- Educate patients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, recovery expectations, and preventive strategies.
- Counsel patients on injury prevention, exercise programs, weight management, and lifestyle modifications.
- Facilitate informed decision-making through comprehensive patient communication.
Qualifications Required
- Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Active New York State Nurse Practitioner license.
- Minimum of 3,600 hours of qualifying clinical experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner, meeting New York State requirements for independent practice without a written practice agreement.
- DEA registration and prescriptive authority.
- Minimum 3-5 years of orthopedic, sports medicine, physiatry, pain management, or musculoskeletal medicine experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate and manage orthopedic patients.
- Proficiency interpreting musculoskeletal imaging and diagnostic studies.
- Strong procedural skills with musculoskeletal injections and orthopedic interventions.
Preferred
- Fellowship or advanced training in Orthopedic, Sports Medicine, Musculoskeletal, or Interventional Medicine.
- Experience with ultrasound-guided procedures.
- Experience with PRP and regenerative medicine therapies.
- Experience managing Workers’ Compensation and No-Fault patient populations.
- Familiarity with orthopedic outcome measures and evidence-based treatment protocols.
