Lead the membership, marketing, communications and events functions of Australia’s peak body for sports medicine and sports science.
This senior, hands-on role combines membership growth and engagement with CRM ownership, brand and communications leadership, and oversight of a year-round program of online and face-to-face professional events including SMA’s major annual scientific conference.
Key responsibilities
Membership
- Develop and continually improve SMA’s membership strategy and value proposition.
- Drive member acquisition, engagement, renewal and retention.
- Develop initiatives that support members through professional development, mentoring, networking, career support and professional recognition.
- Use member research, feedback and behavioural data to identify needs and improve services.
- Support relevant advisory committees, special interest groups and professional networks.
CRM and member systems
- Take functional ownership of SMA’s CRM (Zoho) and membership processes.
- Develop and improve member journeys, workflows, automations, segmentation and reporting.
- Ensure member data is accurate, useful and effectively applied across membership, marketing, communications and events.
- Translate business requirements into practical CRM and process improvements.
- Use membership data to monitor performance and inform decisions.
Marketing, communications and brand
- Lead SMA’s marketing and communications function and establish clear standards for quality, consistency and effectiveness.
- Oversee member communications, marketing campaigns, publications, digital channels and promotional activity.
- Protect and strengthen SMA’s brand across member, stakeholder and public touchpoints.
- Ensure marketing activity supports membership growth, engagement, events and SMA’s broader strategic objectives including our Education & Training business.
Events and professional development
- Oversee SMA’s year-round program of online and face-to-face professional events, including webinars, networking events, professional development activities and other member engagement opportunities.
- Lead the team responsible for planning and delivering SMA’s major annual scientific conference.
- Oversee conference planning, marketing, delegate experience, sponsorship, stakeholder engagement and operational delivery.
- Ensure events respond to member needs, strengthen professional connections and contribute to member engagement and retention.
- Establish effective project governance, budgets, timelines, responsibilities and performance measures for events.
- Use participation data and attendee feedback to evaluate and continually improve SMA’s events program.
Leadership
- Lead, develop and coordinate the membership, marketing, communications and events team.
- Contribute to organisational strategy and planning as a member of the leadership team.
- Manage budgets, priorities, suppliers and performance across the portfolio.
- Work collaboratively with SMA’s education and training team and other areas of the organisation.
- Build effective relationships with members, committees, partners and external stakeholders.
About you
You are an experienced membership professional who understands that successful membership organisations are built around a clear value proposition for members.
You can think strategically while remaining comfortable working through the operational detail whether reviewing a member journey, improving a CRM workflow, refining a campaign brief.
You will bring:
- Significant experience within a membership association, professional body, charitable organisation, institute, or college with a genuine membership or subscription model.
- Demonstrated success improving member acquisition, engagement, renewal or retention.
- A strong understanding of membership value propositions, member journeys and lifecycle engagement.
- Advanced practical experience with CRM or membership management systems, including workflows, automation, segmentation, data quality and reporting.
- Experience leading marketing and communications, with sound judgement about brand, content and campaign quality.
- Experience leading or overseeing a program of online and face-to-face events, including complex projects
- Experience leading and developing a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong project-management capability.
- Excellent written communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Relevant qualifications in business, marketing, communications, events or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
