Orthopedic Medical Assistant Job Description
Job Title: Orthopedic Medical Assistant
Department: Orthopedics / Sports Medicine
Reports To: Orthopedic Physician or Practice Manager
Position Summary
The Orthopedic Medical Assistant supports orthopedic physicians and clinical staff by assisting with patient care, administrative duties, and clinical procedures. This role requires knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions, orthopedic terminology, casting/splinting techniques, and excellent patient service skills in a fast-paced medical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Prepare patients for examinations and procedures by obtaining medical histories, and chief complaints
- Assist orthopedic physicians during exams, injections, aspirations, fracture care, and minor procedures
- Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, slings, and orthopedic dressings as directed
- Prepare instruments and treatment rooms
- Perform suture/staple removal, and dressing changes
- Obtain and document patient information accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Educate patients on treatment plans, medications, and use of orthopedic devices
- Assist with durable medical equipment (DME) fitting and instruction
Administrative Duties
- Answer phones and respond to patient questions professionally
- Coordinate communication between physicians, patients, pharmacies, and other healthcare providers
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies and orthopedic equipment
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent certification preferred
- Previous orthopedic or sports medicine experience preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and orthopedic procedures preferred
- Experience with EMR systems preferred
- Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist patients throughout the workday
- Ability to lift and move equipment or assist patients when necessary
- Manual dexterity to apply splints, braces, and perform clinical tasks
Work Environment
- Physician office or orthopedic clinic setting
- Frequent interaction with patients recovering from injuries or surgery
- Exposure to medical equipment, X-ray environments, and clinical procedures
Preferred Skills
- Casting and splinting experience
- Knowledge of orthopedic anatomy and common injuries
- Excellent bedside manner and patient education skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Pay: $18.00 – $22.00 per hour
