Position: LtS Instructor – Summer 2026
This position is funded through either department funds or Federal Work Study (FWS) funds. Students who are not eligible for FWS are still encouraged to apply, as department funding may be available.

Position Overview
We are looking for a reliable, energetic Swim Lessons Instructor to teach water safety and swimming skills to students of varying ages and skill levels. We teach through the American Red Cross curriculum, with classes ranging from Parent/Tot, Toddler, and Preschool levels up until levels 1-6. Each class is slightly more advanced than its preceding one, and each class focuses on different water safety skills and swimming techniques.
We need instructors who are comfortable in the pool setting and working with children. In regards to student hourly wage – it ranges from 16-18 dollars an hour depending on experience and certifications. If you hold a current WSI certification, you will be eligible for an adjusted pay rate.
Major Areas of Responsibility
- Teach children of all ages how to swim and be safe in a pool setting. Must be comfortable working with children.
- Must be familiar with (or willing to be trained on) all swimming skills, including, but not limited to: breathing, floating, body position, treading, and recovery.
- Instructors of older levels must be familiar with (or willing to be trained on) all 5 strokes (front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke) as well as additional skills such as diving and turns.
- Must be able and willing to teach pool safety rules including, but not limited to: appropriate pool etiquette, lifeguard awareness, pool depth, and other pool-specific rules to do with running, splashing, and so on.
- Will need to fill out report cards for each student at the end of each session indicating if the child is fit to move to the next level. Halfway through each session the instructor will also need to fill out a shorter ‘half-way’ report to indicate each child’s progress.
Working Conditions
- Can involve lots of physical exertion, such as treading and holding up children.
Required Qualifications
- Recommended but not required: WSI Certification (+CPR Training)
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and hold 50+ pounds (a child’s weight).
- If teaching older classes – must be able to swim or tread in the deep end of the pool.
- Must be able and willing to demonstrate skills to the children.
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
