Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Ohio Certification/Licensure by the State of Ohio, Department of Education
- Previous experience as a coach or player in the specific sport(s) being coached.
- Strong knowledge of the rules, strategies, and techniques of the sport(s) being coached.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate, inspire, and build positive relationships with student-athletes.
- Understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in athletics.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting student development.
- Ability to follow directions, maintain confidentiality, and uphold professional standards.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License
- Must pass criminal background check
General Description
The High School Varsity Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for leading and managing the boys’ varsity basketball team. The coach will develop and implement practice plans, instruct players in game strategies and techniques, and promote sportsmanship and teamwork. The coach will also oversee the overall basketball program, including coordinating with junior varsity and freshman coaches to ensure a cohesive and progressive program.
Essential
Functions
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions.
- Develop game strategies and analyze game performance.
- Provide individualized skill development and mentoring to student-athletes.
- Foster a positive team environment that emphasizes respect, discipline, and sportsmanship.
- Program Management:
- Coordinate the basketball program with the junior varsity and freshman coaches.
- Oversee the recruitment and selection of team members.
- Manage team equipment and uniforms.
- Ensure compliance with all school, district, and state athletic policies and regulations.
- Game Preparation and Management:
- Prepare for games, including developing game plans and scouting opponents.
- Supervise and direct players during games.
- Review and analyze game footage to improve team performance.
- Academic and Personal Development:
- Monitor academic progress of student-athletes to ensure they meet school and state eligibility requirements.
- Promote the development of student-athletes both on and off the court.
- Community and Parental Engagement:
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding team activities and player performance.
- Represent the school and basketball program in a positive manner within the community.
- Organize and participate in community outreach and fundraising activities.
- Professional Development:
- Stay updated on current coaching techniques, strategies, and best practices.
- Attend coaching clinics and workshops as required.

- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Physical ability to conduct practices and coach during games.
- Travel may be required for away games and tournaments.

- Is punctual and thorough in implementation of all assigned duties.
Knowledge Of
Board policies and procedures, building policies and procedures, student code of conduct, community resource agencies, emergency preparedness drills, public relations, federal and state reporting, and records management.
Ability To
Interpret policies, procedures and regulations, follow instructions, communicate effectively, prepare, maintain, and file accurate and concise reports, collect data, recognize individual differences, lift a moderate amount of weight, develop a rapport with students, staff, co-workers, administration and the public.
