General Task Statement: The City of Evanston Gymnastics Program offers instructional classes to children ages 18 months to 15 years. The Gymnastics Instructor II is responsible for coaching children ages 5‑15 in pre‑competitive, Advanced Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced gymnastics classes in small ­group settings, following weekly lesson plans. Opportunities to coach private lessons and birthday parties are available.

Supervision: This position reports to the Chandler‑Newberger Program Coordinator and Division Manager.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with ages 5‑15 in an instructional group setting, including at least 6 months teaching advanced recreational or competitive gymnastics.
  • Previous experience coaching USAG Level 2, Level 3, and Xcel Silver preferred.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a USAG Recreational Coach Membership and maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Must obtain CPR/AED/First Aid certification from a nationally recognized institution and maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the USAG Women’s Developmental Program and USAG Xcel Program.

Essential Functions

  • Attend staff training sessions.
  • Be positive, patient, and engaging.
  • Ensure the safety of participants.
  • Instruct and facilitate program activities according to weekly lesson plans.
  • Assist with program set‑up as needed.
  • Maintain open communication with the Program Supervisor/Coordinator, other staff, and families/guardians regarding program information.
  • Report participant progress and behavior to parents or Supervisor.
  • Ensure participants are properly dismissed to their caregivers.
  • Communicate to supervisor(s) if any problems or issues require special attention.
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment and storage areas.
  • Complete written reports such as accident or incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor/Coordinator.

Schedule

  • Schedule is flexible.
  • Classes offered weekday evenings and weekends all day.
  • Weekday evening availability required.
  • Weekend availability preferred.
  • Summer availability preferred.

Specifications

Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Language: Read staff manuals, memoranda, and attendance sheets; write attendance sheets, accident reports, incident reports, and camper behavior reports using prescribed formats; speak effectively to co‑workers, supervisors, citizens, and the public.

Training: At least 1 year experience working with children; at least 1 year experience participating in team or club sports.

Physical Demands: Light work involving exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds frequently; includes walking, standing, and occasional heavy lifting of program equipment.

Work locations include recreation centers, gymnasiums, multipurpose rooms, kitchens, swimming pools, athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, office space, conference rooms, beaches, and field‑trip sites.
