Minimum Certification Standard

Role Description: The Food Safety Officer is a full-time, on-site role based in Muizenberg, responsible for ensuring that all manufacturing operations comply with food safety, hygiene, and quality standards. This junior-to-mid-level role will support the refinement, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the organisation's Food Safety Management System (FSMS) in line with HACCP, FSSC 22000, GMP (specific to health supplements and/or complementary medicines), as well as all applicable South African food safety legislation, working under the guidance of the Food Safety Team Leader. The role carries growing responsibility for the unique risk profile of health, wellness, and sports nutrition products, including allergen control, contaminant management, ingredient traceability, and prevention of prohibited-substance contamination in products intended for athletes and health-conscious consumers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintaining, implementing, monitoring, improving the FSMS.
- Maintaining South African regulatory compliance.
- Sector-specific risk management – food, health and wellness, and sports nutrition sectors.
- Training, culture and continuous improvement of the FSMS and all staff involved.

Minimum Qualifications:
- An appropriate tertiary qualification, e.g. BSc Food Science or Consumer Science, or BTech in Food Science.
- Additional accreditation or certification in HACCP and R638, ± FSSC 22000.
- Minimum 0-3 years experience within an FSSC 22000, BRCGS or equivalent GFSI-benchmarked manufacturing environment.
- Junior-level candidates with 0-2 years experience and relevant qualifications will be considered with structured mentorship toward full accountability.
- Demonstrated expertise in Food Safety and Hygiene, with the ability to implement and monitor robust food safety systems in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to interpret and apply local and international food safety regulations and standards.
- Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and proficiency in documentation and reporting.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to train and influence cross-functional teams on food safety practices.
