Employment Opportunity

Under the direction of the Fitness/Corporate Wellness Supervisor, the Fitness Assistant helps oversee the Recreation and Wellness Center’s fitness spaces and Personal Training and Semi-Private Training programs. This position supports operations that maintain a welcoming, engaging, and safe fitness environment.

The Fitness Assistant builds relationships with members and guests, supports trainers in delivering high-quality service, and identifies opportunities to increase participation in fitness spaces and training programs. This role assists with recruiting, hiring, training, and coaching Fitness Attendants and provides shift leadership to ensure consistent service standards.

The Fitness Assistant acts as the point of contact for fitness operations during assigned shifts, including some evenings and weekends, in the Supervisor’s absence. Benefits include participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), the Well and Outdoor Pool memberships.

Operating Hours:
Monday-Friday: 5:30 am-10 pm
Saturday-Sunday: 8 am-8 pm
Essential Functions of Work

Assist with oversight and growth of the Personal Training and Semi-Private Training programs.

Serve as a visible presence at the Well by interacting with members, answering questions, and providing exercise guidance in collaboration with Fitness Attendants.

Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, and coaching Fitness Attendants.

Lead or assist with staff trainings focused on customer service, equipment knowledge, safety procedures, and fitness floor engagement.

Assist with staff scheduling and provide Fitness Attendant shift coverage as needed.

Conduct Fitness Floor Orientations as needed and demonstrate safe use of exercise equipment.

Lead member engagement initiatives such as fitness challenges, workshops, introductory sessions, and small group training opportunities.

Assist with Community Center programs, events, and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of Recreation and Wellness Center programs, policies, and services.

Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with members and guests.

Knowledge of exercise principles and safe equipment use.

Ability to mentor and support part-time fitness staff.

Ability to identify opportunities to improve member engagement and program participation.

Ability to use Rec Trac or similar recreation management software.

Proficiency with email and digital communication tools.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and problem-solving skills with minimal supervision.

Ability to utilize effective communication and de-escalation techniques.
Typical Qualifications

CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.

Nationally accredited certification in Personal Training, Group Exercise, Strength and Conditioning, or related fitness credential.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the fitness industry, including personal training, group exercise instruction, or program leadership.

Previous experience supervising, coaching, or mentoring staff preferred.

Previous customer service experience.

Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds; stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods.

Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.

Must be at least 21 years of age.
WELL MEMBERSHIP
Part-time employees are eligible to enroll in the employee Well membership program. This program allows employees to receive an individual Well membership if they meet the program’s quarterly goal.

RETIREMENT PENSION
The City contributes 14% monthly toward retirement benefits offered through the Ohio Retirement System (OPERS) and the employee contributes 10%.

PERSONAL LEAVE
Part-time employees who have worked for a minimum of 1,000 hours during the prior calendar year for the City, shall be eligible for forty (40) hours of paid personal leave each year. Part-time employees who have worked less than 1,000 hours but more than 500 hours in the previous calendar year for the City shall be eligible for twenty-four (24) hours of paid personal leave each year.
