The Hockey News is looking for a Deputy Managing Editor to help lead our daily editorial operations and support one of hockey's most recognizable media brands. Working alongside the Managing Editor, you'll play a key role in directing coverage across thehockeynews.com, ensuring we're fast, accurate, engaging and always on top of the biggest stories in the game.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who loves hockey, thrives in a fast-paced news environment, and isn't afraid to wear multiple hats.
What You'll Do
Lead Daily Coverage
Coordinate and oversee daily editorial coverage across The Hockey News network
Assign and schedule stories to staff and contributors
Monitor breaking news and help direct coverage priorities
Support team site editors with guidance, feedback and editorial oversight
Edit and Publish
Copy edit stories for clarity, accuracy and style
Review and approve content before publication
Assist with article layout, presentation and homepage planning
Maintain editorial standards across all platforms
Write
React quickly to breaking news and major developments around the hockey world
Produce opinion pieces, analysis and feature content
Identify story opportunities and help drive conversation around key topics
Create Video Content
Appear on camera for short-form hockey news and analysis videos
Record 2-5 minute segments discussing major stories and trends
Collaborate with the social and video teams on content ideas
Help Build the Team
Supervise and mentor interns
Host weekly writer meetings
Assist with recruiting and onboarding writers and contributors
Foster a collaborative, supportive editorial environment
Community Engagement
Moderate and participate in The Hockey News community forums
Help maintain a positive and engaging experience for readers
What We're Looking For
Strong editing and writing experience in sports media, journalism or digital publishing
Deep knowledge and passion for hockey
Ability to thrive in a fast-moving news environment
Comfortable appearing on camera and creating video content
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Experience managing contributors, freelancers or editorial teams is a strong asset
A collaborative attitude and willingness to jump into whatever the day demands
