Cheer: Fall & Winter Season- Varsity Head Coach

We are seeking an energetic, organized, and safety-conscious Head Cheer Coach to lead our high school cheerleading program for both fall and/or winter. The candidate will mentor student-athletes, promote school spirit, and develop a competitive, fundamentally sound program. You will oversee varsity squad (and potentially junior varsity depending on squad numbers) for both sideline support (football/wrestling/basketball) and competitive routines.

MSHSL Coaching Certification and NFHS Cheer Certification is required by the first day of practice.

Essential Functions:

Coaching Responsibilities:

• Plan, organize, and lead all practice sessions and team meetings, focusing on proper progressions for stunts, tumbling, jumps, and motions.
• Choreograph or oversee routines for game days, pep rallies, and competitions.
• Evaluate student talent fairly during tryouts and determine team placements.
• Prioritize athlete safety above all else. Maintain strict compliance with MSHSL association rules and NFHS Cheer safety guidelines.
• Ensure proper spotting techniques are utilized at all times and match stunt progressions to athlete skill levels.
• Communicate effectively with players, coaches, activities department, and parents about expectations, goals of the program, practices, changes in the schedule, and games.
• Practices are to include JWP Core Values and principles transcending the field of play.
• Plan effective and organized practices that maximize the players abilities that properly prepare them for practices and competitions.
• Practices must be characterized by instruction that accounts for a logical sequence of fundamentals that consider the developmental level of the athlete and that lead to an enhanced progression of player knowledge, skill, and capability. Instruction must move from simple to complex and known to unknown.
• Coordinate uniform inventory, apparel ordering, and budgeting in alignment with Activities Director approval.
• Enforce the school’s athletic code of conduct, promoting sportsmanship, integrity, and inclusivity.
• Monitor student-athletes’ academic eligibility, offering guidance and enforcing school policy for participation.
• Serve as an ambassador of school spirit, ensuring the squad represents the institution positively at all public events.

Additional Administrative Responsibilities:

• Work with the activities director in scheduling facilities for practices and competitions.
• Be present or assign a school board approved coach to provide supervision. Supervision includes on the field of play, locker room, training room, and anywhere the sport requires them to be. Athletes must be denied access when a coach cannot be physically present to supervise.
• Provide proper transportation, along with the activities department, to and from competitions. Athletes must travel with the team to the event site as a team, unless prior approval and written permission from guardians and activities director. Athlete must sign out with the coach after competition to leave with parents/relatives. Athlete must have guardian approval, guardian note, and coach approval to leave with non-family members.
• Complete the Emergency Action Plan to use during practices on and off site.
• Complete all learning modules on the Coach’s Clipboard on MSHSL, NFHS Stunt Certification and MSHSL Head Coach Certification.
• Expected to be able to administer accepted, prioritized, standard first aid procedures in response to a range of traumatic injuries – especially those that are potentially life-threatening.
• Promote the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations.
• Work with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submit a list of award winners at the end of the season.
• Participate in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and assemblies.
• Follow any other instructions and to perform any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or Athletic Director or the appropriate administration.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prior coaching or cheer experience
• Strong knowledge of the sport, including rules, techniques, and strategy.
• Ability to lead, mentor, and connect with high school student-athletes.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Must meet all school district and state requirements for coaching and pass required background checks.

Physical Demands: This role requires active physical demonstration of skills when applicable, standing for long periods during games and practices, and working in outdoor elements (heat, cold, light rain) during sideline games. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision and distance vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and Exposure to bodily fluids; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Stipend Position: Fall Cheer Season: $2,000; Winter Cheer Season: $2,000
