About the Practice
Dr. Julia Hohman has run a solo Family Medicine and Sports Medicine practice in Walnut Creek for over 20 years. We see 14 to 16 patients per day. That number is intentional. It gives our team the time to take thorough histories, coordinate referrals and prior authorizations, follow up on results, and build real relationships with the patients and families we serve.
Our patients describe the office as feeling like a family, and they notice the people who take care of them. One patient’s review: "From the reception desk to the nurses, everyone was so sweet. I didn’t feel like I was going to the doctor’s office, but more like joining a family."
We use Epic for charting, e-prescribing, and lab orders. We’ve been on electronic records since 2004. The office is near downtown Walnut Creek with free parking.
The Role
You’ll work alongside Dr. Hohman as part of a small, tight team handling both clinical back office and some administrative duties. The practice covers primary care and sports medicine, so your days include a good variety of patient visits and clinical work.
Clinical responsibilities:
- Rooming patients (includes taking vitals and patient histories)
- Performing EKGs, administering injections/vaccines, and doing ear lavages
- Performing urine tests, rapid strep tests, and flu/COVID-19 tests
- Setting up procedure trays and autoclaving instruments
- Ordering lab and imaging tests
- Communicating treatment plans and notifying patients of lab results
Administrative responsibilities:
- Appointment scheduling and triaging phone messages
- Obtaining prior authorizations for imaging, medications, and referrals
- Coordinating specialist referrals
- Scanning records, stocking exam rooms, ordering medical supplies and vaccines
- Charting and coding in Epic
Our medical assistants handle prior authorizations and referral coordination as a core part of the role. Patients count on that work, and we take it seriously.
What We Offer
- 4-day work week. Monday through Thursday. Fridays are typically off. No evenings, no weekends, no rotating shifts.
- A manageable pace. 14–16 patients per day means you have time to do your job well and give each patient real attention. If you’ve worked in a system seeing 25 to 30 patients a day, you know the difference.
- A collaborative team. This is a small office where everyone works together. Your contributions are visible and valued, not lost in a large organization.
- Epic training. If you haven’t worked in Epic before, we’ll train you. Epic proficiency is a career asset that goes with you.
- Benefits: 401(k) with employer match, disability insurance, paid time off.
A note on compensation: We know that larger hospital systems in the East Bay often pay more. We can’t match those numbers. What we offer instead is a predictable schedule, a daily lunch break, a pace that lets you practice your skills without burning out, and an environment where you’re a respected member of the care team. For the right person, that trade-off is worth it.
Who We’re Looking For
We want someone who plans to stay. The ideal candidate has several years of experience, values quality over volume, and is looking for long-term stability in a practice that treats its staff and patients well.
Requirements:
- Medical Assistant Certification
- At least 3 years of back office experience in a primary care or family medicine setting
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal
- Computer literacy
- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
- Phlebotomy/blood draw experience (we offer in-house draws but most lab work goes to LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics)
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician
- Epic experience (not required; we will train)
- Some front office or medical receptionist experience
This role is best suited for an experienced MA. New graduates and applicants without clinical back office experience will not be a good fit for this position.
