Basketball Coach

Athletic Director and Building Principal
Position Summary
The Basketball Coach is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of the school’s basketball program. The coach promotes academic success, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and character while developing student-athletes’ skills in a safe and positive environment. The coach serves as a role model and represents the school with professionalism and integrity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive basketball program aligned with the school’s mission and athletic philosophy.
- Plan and conduct effective practices that improve individual and team performance.
- Develop offensive and defensive strategies appropriate to the team’s skill level.
- Promote teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and respect.
- Foster a positive and inclusive team culture.
Student-Athlete Development
- Teach basketball fundamentals, game strategies, and sportsmanship.
- Encourage academic achievement and monitor student eligibility.
- Promote leadership, responsibility, and personal growth.
- Ensure the physical and emotional well-being of all student-athletes.
- Encourage healthy lifestyle habits and good decision-making.
Game Management
- Prepare the team for competition through organized practices and scouting.
- Manage all aspects of games, including player substitutions, strategy, and sportsmanship.
- Supervise athletes before, during, and after practices, contests, and travel.
- Ensure compliance with all game rules and school policies.
Communication
- Maintain positive communication with athletes, parents, school administrators, officials, and community members.
- Conduct preseason parent and player meetings.
- Communicate schedules, expectations, and team policies in a timely manner.
- Address concerns professionally and respectfully.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate team rosters and required documentation.
- Inventory, maintain, and secure uniforms and equipment.
- Assist with scheduling, transportation, and fundraising activities as needed.
- Follow district purchasing procedures and budget guidelines.
- Complete required reports and paperwork promptly.
Safety and Compliance
- Enforce all district, conference, and state athletic association rules and regulations.
- Ensure a safe practice and competition environment.
- Maintain current certifications required by the district (CPR, First Aid, concussion training, etc., if applicable).
- Report injuries and incidents according to district procedures.
Community Engagement
- Represent the school positively within the community.
- Encourage community support for the basketball program.
- Participate in athletic department meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Support other school athletic and extracurricular programs when appropriate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Previous basketball coaching and/or playing experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, coaching techniques, and player development.
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, officials, and community members.
- Successful completion of required background checks and district hiring requirements.
- Ability to meet state and district coaching certification requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to demonstrate basketball skills and drills.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to travel with teams to competitions.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during the season.
Terms of Employment
- Seasonal position.
- Salary and stipend determined according to the district salary schedule and board-approved athletic stipend schedule.
- Performance evaluated annually by the Athletic Director and/or Building Principal in accordance with district policy.
