At SUNY Oneonta, you can apply to become our next Associate Professor & Director of the Athletic Training Program in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. This leadership role will support the development and success of a newly created graduate program in Athletic Training (AT), anticipated to begin in January 2027. This is a 10-month, in-person appointment with a reduced teaching load while serving in the director role. While the position follows a 10-month academic schedule, the Director is expected to contribute during the summer months to support program development, implementation, and ongoing operations, with additional summer stipend support provided. In this role, you will lead program administration and accreditation efforts, oversee curriculum and clinical education, and support student success through teaching, advising, and engagement across academic and professional settings.

The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences provides a collaborative and student-centered environment focused on preparing graduates for professional careers in athletic training, coaching, exercise science, and related fields. As part of this department, the Director will play a key role in shaping a new graduate program, strengthening community partnerships, and advancing the department’s commitment to academic excellence, applied learning, and professional development.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership for the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the program’s mission, goals, and strategic plan in alignment with university priorities.
  • Administering all aspects of the program, including organization, operation, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Overseeing initial CAATE accreditation and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Overseeing curriculum design, development, delivery, and assessment to ensure alignment with program learning outcomes and professional competencies.
  • Coordinating year-round course scheduling and providing academic and career advising to students within the program.
  • Teaching courses within the Athletic Training Program consistent with faculty workload expectations (typically 2-4 courses annually), with potential contributions to Sport Coaching and Leadership (MA) and/or Exercise Sciences (BA).
  • Supporting student success in both in-person and online learning environments and mentoring students in their academic, professional, and personal development.
  • Directing the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of clinical education experiences, and establishing and maintaining community partnerships and clinical sites to support practicum opportunities.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to support student recruitment, retention, engagement, and professional success.
  • Engaging in scholarly and professional activities, including ongoing professional development.
  • Participating in University, School, Departmental, and program-level service.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and using program data to inform decision-making, assessment, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintaining required accreditation documentation, including the timely preparation and submission of reports and self-studies.
  • Participating in budget planning, resource allocation, and long-range financial planning for the program.
  • Participating in the recruitment and selection of program faculty and staff in accordance with institutional procedures.
  • Promoting a culture of transparency, collaboration, and effective communication across program, institutional, and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

The Program Director is a full-time faculty member whose primary assignment is to the Athletic Training Program and is expected to possess the following qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctoral degree (e.g., D.A.T., Ph.D., or Ed.D.).
  • Current New York State athletic training credential and good standing with the state regulatory agency in New York.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant teaching and/or professional experience in athletic training, demonstrating contemporary expertise.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of accreditation experience, including work with accreditation processes.
  • Record of administrative or leadership experience in an educational or clinical setting.
  • Previous clinical practice as an athletic trainer.

Additional:

  • Previous full-time academic appointment at the associate professor level with teaching responsibilities at the postsecondary level.
  • Scholarly work within the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee program operations, including curriculum, clinical education, and assessment processes.
  • Demonstrated academic experience sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.
  • Strong understanding of Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accreditation standards and field education requirements.
  • Experience with program evaluation, including collection, analysis, and use of data to support continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience in maximizing faculty, staff, and student professional growth and potential.
  • Demonstrated efforts to increase student access and success.
  • Knowledge of online program planning, curriculum development, and monitoring students’ academic progress.
  • Experience recruiting students into an academic program.
