Position Purpose
To participate as part of a decision-making team (coaching staff) under the direction of the head coach in planning, coaching, recruiting, administering, and promoting the Men’s Heavyweight Rowing program within EARC, Ivy League and NCAA and institutional standards, achieving the overall goals by providing recommendations, suggestions, and decisions regarding game strategies, line‑ups, and recruitment priorities, as well as offering initiative and independent judgment in coaching instruction, evaluating and communicating with prospective recruits, and representing the program to constituents.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
3-5 years playing and/or coaching rowing at the high school or collegiate level
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of rowing skills and strategies
- Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse community
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants and highly selective admissions standards
- Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and serve the needs of a large and diverse community

Key Accountabilities Coaching and Mentoring (50%)
- Contributes to planning and implementing conditioning, training, and coaching programs for the heavyweight rowing team
- Assists head coach in conducting team practices, training, conditioning, and competitions
- Prepares scouting reports and game plans for opponents
- During competitions, makes recommendations to head coach regarding adjustments to game plans and line‑ups
- Teaches rowing skills to student‑athletes during practices, games, and individual/small group sessions
- Evaluates athlete performance and offers technical, strategic, and mental instruction and advice
- Demonstrates sincere interest in academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student‑athlete; counsels team members; consults with head coach and college staff as necessary to resolve issues
- Independently seeks and develops new training concepts and sport‑specific knowledge to enhance overall coaching staff knowledge
Recruiting (35%)
- Assists head coach in developing and implementing overall recruiting plan, including identification of qualified students and talented athletes; communicating with prospects by phone, mail, e-mail
- Travels to evaluate prospects, meet parents and high school coaches; organizes and participates in campus visits for prospects
- Maintains appropriate recruiting records and stays updated on EARC, Ivy League, and NCAA regulations
- Provides knowledge about college programs and opportunities to effectively inform prospects
Administration (10%)
- Knows and complies with EARC, Ivy League, and NCAA rules; stays abreast of rule changes and ensures athletes and representatives are informed
- Assists with planning and administering budget for heavyweight rowing program (equipment, travel, recruiting)
- Plans and reconciles recruiting and travel expenses
- Assists in developing competitive schedule and coordinating team travel plans
- Communicates with alumni, parents, and supporters regarding program status
Other (5%)
- Assists head coach in promoting Dartmouth and rowing program through camps, clinics, and community involvement
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with constituents (students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, fans, community members, media, etc.)
- Represents Dartmouth, athletics department, and rowing program in exemplary fashion
- Demonstrates professionalism and collegiality through actions, interactions, and communications appropriate to an environment welcoming to all
- Performs other duties as assigned
