The Amateur Boxing Trainer identifies, develops, and coaches competitive athletes for local, regional, and national amateur tournaments (e.g., USA Boxing sanctioned events). The role emphasizes strict technical precision, tactical fight planning, physical conditioning, and corner management during live bouts.
Key responsibilities
- Fighter Development: Advance athletes from basic mechanics to advanced tactical sparring, infighting, counter-punching, and ring generalship.
- Corner Management: Act as the chief second or corner during bouts, providing critical, real-time strategic adjustments between rounds.
- Fight Strategy: Analyze opponents’ styles to design targeted fight plans and tactical drilling regimens.
- Sanctioning & Compliance: Ensure all fighters meet weight, maintain active passbooks, and comply with USA Boxing (or relevant national governing body) medical and administrative regulations.
- Periodized Conditioning: Program specialized strength, agility, and aerobic conditioning tailored to 3-round amateur bout timelines.
- Technical Instruction: Teach core boxing mechanics, including stance, footwork, punch combinations, and defensive techniques.
- Program Design: Create personalized training regimens or group fitness choreography that incorporates heavy bag work, pad work, and strength circuits.
- Safety Enforcement: Monitor form during drills and sparring to correct poor technique and mitigate the risk of injury.
- Mitt Work: Hold focus mitts and coaching pads safely to help clients build accuracy, timing, and power.
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure the training area, gloves, wraps, and boxing bags are clean, organized, and safe for use.
Qualifications and requirements
- Certifications: Active USA Boxing Coach Certification (Green level minimum) or regional governing body equivalent, including passed background checks and SafeSport training.
- Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of coaching in a competitive boxing gym or a personal background as a competitive amateur/professional boxer.
- Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of amateur scoring criteria, hand-wrapping techniques, and familiar with corner cutman duties is preferred.
- Availability: Flexibility to travel for weekend tournaments, evening sparring sessions, and weigh-ins.
- Certifications: Preferred personal training credential (e.g., NASM, ACE) or group fitness certification. Active First Aid/CPR certification is standard.
- Physical Fitness: High stamina and physical conditioning required to demonstrate intensive drills and withstand repeated impact while holding mitts.
- Skills: Exceptional communication, time management, and motivational skills to keep clients safe and highly engaged.
Pay: $15.61 – $22.02 per hour
