Position: Adult Sports Staff
Wage: $17.13 to $17.57 per hour (Compensation is determined based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications, with most new hires starting between the minimum and midpoint of the posted wage range)
Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week
Location: University YMCA, Tacoma, WA
As an Adult Sport Staff, you will be responsible for creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for program participants by providing leadership, supervision, and excellent customer service. This role includes monitoring activities, enforcing YMCA policies, organizing and supporting programs, instructing participants on proper equipment use, and responding to questions or concerns while promoting the YMCA’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility to ensure every participant has a positive experience.
Qualifications:

- Positive attitude and previous experience with adult and diverse populations.
- Knowledge and skills in various sports activities and related sports and office equipment, and the ability to instruct participants in techniques.
- A general understanding of specific sport(s) and the rules or display a willingness to learn, and the ability to officiate games accordingly.
- Knowledge of safety procedures.
- Understanding of and commitment to the YMCA Sports Philosophy.
- CPR, First Aid, AED Certified (preferred).
- Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).

- Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person training as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Adult Sports
- Maintain a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment while enforcing YMCA policies.
- Organize activities and support staff as needed.
- Instruct participants on proper equipment use and program activities.
- Respond to participant questions, comments, and concerns with excellent customer service.
Sports Official (Referee)
- Officiate games fairly, consistently, and in accordance with YMCA rules and values.
- Inspect the playing area for safety, meet with team captains, review rules, and start games on time.
- Keep games running smoothly by making confident, impartial calls and maintaining proper court positioning.
- Promote good sportsmanship, communicate clearly with players and coaches, and resolve conflicts professionally, escalating issues when necessary.
- Prepare the playing area for the next game and remain available to answer post-game questions.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Adult Sports Staff provides supervision, leadership and motivation for participants in adult sports programs. Provides a quality experience to participants that focuses on the YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Adult Sports Program Director
Location: University Y
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Adult Sports:
- Monitor facility and ensure a safe, positive and fun environment. Confidently and tactfully enforce YMCA policies.
- Organize activities as needed. Assist other staff as necessary.
- Provide instruction for correct and proper use of activity equipment when needed. Teach and demonstrate in a positive manner.
- Possess the knowledge and skills needed to instruct in program activities.
- Assist participants with questions, comments or concerns about adult programs.
Sports Official (Referee):
- Possess the knowledge and skills needed to officiate games.
- Meet with the site supervisor for instruction or information as needed.
- Before every game, check the playing area for hazards. Meet with team captains to go over rules and calls.
- A few minutes prior to the game meet with teams to go over ground rules, and to encourage both teams to play a fair game. Incorporate the YMCA values and mission statement.
- Start games on schedule.
- Keep games moving.
- Be alert, firm and quick when making a call. Communicate clearly with the players and coach when making an infraction call.
- Do not stand still while officiating. Change position to have full view of the playing area.
- Enforce the rules in an impartial and consistent manner.
- Stay calm and in control. Avoid arguments with players, coach and fans. If a situation arises that can’t be handled in a professional manner, direct it to the YMCA Program Director.
- Help clear the playing area so the next game can begin on time.
- Be available for any questions directly after the game.
Financial Development and Philanthropy:
- Meet performance measurement by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our mission.
- Assist staff leadership team in reaching campaign goals through recruiting campaigners, making personal asks and supporting branch events.
Safety Protocols:
- Cleaning and sanitation protocols will be required of all staff.
- Staff will be responsible for frequent touchpoint cleaning and sanitizing in specific areas.
- Staff are expected to adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of PPE.

- Regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

- Must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move a higher amount.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Occasionally may need to plan and participate in programming outdoors.
